Making a Pen Wrap - Part III

Here are some of the fabrics I can consider for the three pen wraps. I am hesitant to use the blue silk as it is actually part of an old sari I own.

But I have no hesitation using the tapestry that is somewhat bold but rather sophisticated and the right weight.

Or I can possibly use this chocolate brown silk which picks up some of the colour in the tapestry fabric.
Either way I have enough fabric for two complete pen wraps and only have to find some ribbon or binding for the tie.

Pen Wraps - Part II

When I lived frugally as a stagiaire or the wife of a student, I learned not only frugality but resourcefulness. I could make a 10-course meal with two pots and 3 burners. I don't think we forget, but neglect to retrieve all our memories.

This afternoon I remembered that when I was working on my Susan B. Anthony and fabric arts submissions, I collected some small snips of fabric. I have the unusued snips of fabric, lace, buttons, etc. in a beautiful old red hat box.

I went down cellar to check out what is, in fact, in that box. I may have found two or three possible tiny remnants that could serve as a liner for the pen wraps. Time to take out that tape measure.

Making a Pen Wrap - Part I

I took out my pencil wrap, a gift from my daughter when I went ontheroad, to study its construction and see how it could be adapted for fountain pens. I took some measurements, made some notes and found some fabric I had stored in a trunk that might make a good outer body. I still need to find some sheer silk or finely woven cotten for the lining.

These are some of the questions I asked myself.

  • How many pens do I want to wrap?
  • What is the width (girth) of the pens I want to wrap?
  • What is their length?
  • What if any extra width or length is necessary to accommodate various clips?
  • Is there an advantage to have the wrap overlap partially or wholly?

With the subject of pen wraps currently being discussed on the FPn, Hisnibs points us to one of the splendid wraps made by his wife.

I have the advantage of custom planning and will make some modifications to that design.

I'd like the flap to fold entirely over the fountain pens. I will make one wrap for my shorter Pelikans and a second wrap for my Safaris.
