A look at Hannelore Baron

Hannelore Baron, 1926-1987, Assemblage, 1960s

It was at Senior and Shopmaker Gallery that I first saw Hannelore Baron's small but intriguing works. While that exhibit is no longer available on line, it appears some of Ms. Baron's work can be seen here.

I distinctly remember my visit. It was a quiet cloudy day, and no one else was in the gallery. I had ample time to wander around, and even touch one or two of the assemblage pieces.

While the assemblages reminded me of Cornell's work, most of the paper collages seemed child-like and whispery--nearly invisible, as invisible as Baron herself probably felt. I commented to the gallery owner that I wondered if Baron's story wasn't so complex and multilayered if she would have received any attention in the art world.

Today her work can be found in the Smithsonian, the Modern Museum of Art and many other fine art exhibits.

  1. So you're the guy who was touching all the boxes at the Senior & Shopmaker show - only kidding, I love your blog.
