I went over to see what's happening at sketch crawl after I received a notice about the next official date: January 10, the first for 2009.
And I looked around to see if anything new had been posted. No, but I did check out Jamie's review of these sketchbooks and wonder if Biffybeans has these?

I have one of the "Drawing" ones. Don't like it. I reviewed it here:

This is the 3x5 landscape model.
The inside of the Hand*Book Artist Journal states "Manufactured by Global Art Materials Inc, Kansas City MO" but the outer wrapper states "Made in India" so I was curious to learn more about how and where these journals were made.
After speaking to a very nice man from Global Art Materials, I learned that the paper is made in Argentina, where they were able to maintain the consistent acid-free quality that is important to the artist. The book cloth binding is from Europe, and the book is ultimately finished in Mumbai, India.
I am under the impression that Global Art Materials is dedicated to putting out high quality products dedicated to the artist.
For those interested, I was told that a new gridded 3x5 journal is due to come out soon, (for $2.99!) as is a whole new line of 6x9 journals. Global Arts does not currently have a web presence but relies on various major online art retailers such as Dick Blick & Cheap Joe's to sell their products. (I bought mine at a Dick Blick store)
The paper in this journal is off-white and about 130gr. It is suitable for light watercolor washes, and I tried a number of different pens & markers on it with little to no bleed through.
05/28/08 Edited to add: The texture of this paper just won't grow on me, and the signatures are sewed in with two small stitches that are starting to come apart. I haven't had the book that long, nor have I used it very hard. These books are cheap, and I suppose you get what you pay for.
Thanks for the update and info.
ReplyDeleteI believe Global is also selling some other notebooks/journals over at Fine Arts, or perhaps my eyes are deceiving me and they are the same as these.
It's nice!! Lovely and useful art materiel are available at Dick Blick...
