Metro Station: Vijzelgracht

I remember distinctly standing and watching the first underground station being built in Amsterdam.

Perhaps it was because my husband worked for The Ministry of Transportation & Water Management (Ministerie van Verkeer en Waterstaat; V&W) and was one of their transportation specialist at the time. Or perhaps I was just fascinated by how huge blocks of concrete pushed out water to make a tunnel for the metro system.

But whichever reason, it was a fascinating watch, and as amazing as the time I was permitted a visit under 59th Street to see how New York City's subway was built.

Now NRC reports there is trouble in Metro-land, both in Cologne and Amsterdam.
